Hi Michael, thanks so much for taking the time to let me know and your kind words.
As I said originally in the post it was truly humbling to be appreciated like we were to help out and was certainly not our expectation. Indeed, the first house we were in, we did not have a clue who the owner was...and it really didn't matter.
All of us in the car on the way back to our own safe homes down south on the Gold Coast spoke of just how good it was "to be there to help out in some way." even though we recognized just how small that physical help was in the scheme of things.
I personally felt, that most importantly aside from the work was that people just like Mel and you know that we do care so much and we are thinking of you all...

After a small Google search, this page came up. I have familiy living in the house on the corner of Stuart Court and South Queensborough Parade (and I myself used to live in 6 Stuart Court for many years). I was there on the day that photo was taken. I was helping like you to remove the ruin.

Can I just say that, we all appreciate anyone who has simply turned up to help. I was immediately floored by sheer generosity, spirit, assistance and comradship displayed by yourselves and all volunteers. I wish you all happy futures and thankyou for any effort you gave. Everything helps. Point in fact, even a large task, like rebuilding a shell of a structure into a living breathing home, is made easier by many hands.

Thanks Peter! yes, from an operational perspective we all talk about the field manager being this 'outside and unbiased' perspective person - but really that is not actually true as their perspective is very much created by what happens within the franchise system. For best practice, (and the best result) get the input of somebody totally fresh and without agenda on what they are looking at in your franchise business.

I agree Glenn. Sometimes you need someone outside the business and perhaps outside the franchise system itself to look at the business (and the franchisee personally) to offer unbiased and objective advice and to give support from a different perspective.

Thanks for contributing Peter, agree and can also see it being a hard thing to spot for a franchisee buying their biz.
It does come down to the fundamentals of the system - good independent advisers are the key. At the same time, in my view nothing is as effective as speaking directly with as many franchisee's as possible to see how that system is performing in the things that make a difference to them......

I agree with your comments Glenn. Another aspect is for franchisees to make sure they investigate the franchisor carefully before entering into the system and understanding the risk of franchisor failure (which unfortunately has now happened 3 or 4 times in recent years)and take advice as to how to manage that risk as best they can.

Hi Kate, thanks again for your input.
Obviously, like you I believe it is very important that the bringing together of franchisees, franchisors, providers and advisers is really important to the sector. I also think the FCA is making a genuine effort to make it happen as I recall that the cost for a franchisee to attend is around a quarter of that paid by franchisors.
I do know that franchisors pay little attention to encouraging their franchisees to come along by really getting behind it at store level - at least I can speak for the systems I was involved in and those I am in contact with. This may have something to do with the fact that it can sometimes be a challenge to get franchisees to attend their OWN national conference in some systems...WOW! Crazy...
I personally believe that the "we have all the answers you need within our own system" type of attitude and behaviour, is one of the biggest contributors to holding systems back and reducing return on investment at franchise owner level.
Collaboration is certainly the key....might see if I can get hold of some stats on attendance to set a target for the next one!
Thanks again.

Thought provoking post, Glenn. As I see it, the FCA is making a valiant effort to encourage franchisee participation within the industry body and, while that's not easy, I tend to think it's a worthwhile pursuit. I'd like to see more franchisors and franchisees support our community by coming to conference and State events, since this fosters community and helps increase the knowledge of everyone in the sector.

When it comes to franchisee participation, there's perhaps a mindset shift that is needed. When franchisees and franchisors see all the answers as being provided by an individual network, there is a roadblock to participation in the peak body. Yet these days, more than ever, we can not have all the answers ourselves.

I've never attended a conference where I've failed to learn something new, gain a fresh insight and make a new connection that has delighted or inspired me. It saddens me when I hear people say they don't see the ROI from these events - after all, in life we get out what we put in.

I hope the FCA continues to wrestle with the challenges of bringing together franchisors, franchisees, service providers and advisers and fosters the collaboration that will enhance the reputation (and success) of franchising in Australia.

Best, Kate

Great to see the site up and running!

I'm delighted to be part of this important project and to provide food for thought and resources for franchise owners as they journey from employee to business owner and leader.

On my own journey, I've discovered how valuable it is to get ideas from a wide range of people, especially when it comes to selling, managing and leading. Of course, we are the expert in our own field (and as a franchisee you need to work within the franchise model and terms of your agreement) but I've found that the most successful people tend to be those who keep on the look out for that extra idea that can take them to new heights -- and act on that!

So, once again, congratulations on bringing this all together.
